"Why would you do this?"
The crumpled form of the Third Hokage laid on the floor. His eyes were still bright and clear for some reason, but his apparent exhaustion was obvious. Sarutobi was dying like he should be dying. With glory and a sense of heroism. Itachi mused on this as he watched over the slowly dying body of the old man. The young boy --man-- didn't answer the question. He should have, but he didn't. His father had commanded him to stay silent the whole time. No matter how much he wanted to stop this, he couldn't. His mission was still intact. He didn't want to make things even more complicated than it already was. Besides, he still had a little brother to look after.
At the thought of his younger brother, a small and almost invisible frown appeared on his usually nonchalant face. Sighing silently (that's all he could do at the moment), Itachi exited the room that was smelling of death at the moment. A small bubbling sensation was forming in his stomach. Remorse. Guilt. Synonyms, perhaps? Itachi wasn't amused. He was...unhappy with the current situation. Sasuke was with their mother, Mikoto, in what would be a safe haven for them and the other children and female spouses. All of them apart of the Uchiha clan. Fugaku and the rest of the clan members were currently wreaking havoc in Konohagakure.
He should have killed them all when he had the chance.
"No don't! Don't kill me or my daughter," a sob resounded not too far away from him. Not at all interested, Itachi glanced at the balling mother and a small rosette haired girl in the young mother's embrace. "Okaa-san...Okaa-san...What's going on?!" A small muffled voice came from the the little girl. In another direction, Itachi saw a young boy with blond hair looking around in a confused manner. "W-What's going on...?" Itachi could hear the confusion and anxiousness in the boy's voice.
The Kyuubi...
What he was going to do was foolish and he didn't normally partake in foolish actions. This was an exception however. This was the future of Konohagakure, after all...Even though he was apart of this war raging in the village, he would still be the protector. He would still protect the citizens and shinobi of the village.
One way or another.
"Do not be foolish," Itachi said softly but with an air of finality, as he stepped toward the shinobi that was threatening the life of the little girl and her mother. "Do not waste time by frightening the civilian, you have more important matters to attend to." The Uchiha clan member hesitantly nodded before bounding off, the true mission on their mind. The mother didn't stop to look and instead ran away, carrying her daughter. Itachi could have easily slain the two, but that wasn't what he aimed for. Right then, emerald (or was that green?) eyes locked with his own crimson ones.
Turning around, Itachi walked toward the Kyuubi boy; only to find him missing.

Years have passed since than, eight years to be exact, and things have changed.
The Uchihas rule over what used to be Konohagakure with an iron fist. With Fugaku's sudden death, a new ruler from the Uchiha clan must be chosen. It's either Uchiha Itachi or Uchiha Sasuke. The council members (also apart of the Uchiha clan) are leaning toward Itachi. Sasuke, however is trying his best to steal the spot from his brother, while trying to keep his secret friendship with newly appointed Chunin, Haruno Sakura, and the Kyuubi boy, Uzumaki Naruto.
